Organic and Biocyclic Vegan Wine: A Pure Expression of Nature

There is a growing demand for vegan organic wine in Canada and the UK. Conscious wine lovers care about wines with less pesticide residues, less environmental footprint and higher quality and ethics. L’Acadie Vineyards in the Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia makes the best organic wine in Canada and the only certified Biocyclic Vegan wine in Canada.

What Does Organic Wine Mean?

Organic wine is made the same way that wine was made centuries ago before pesticides were invented in the 1950s. In fact, it would be more transparent for conventional wineries to label bottles as “chemical wine” and then our organic wine could be simply “wine”. Grapes are one of the most sprayed agriculture crops but organic vineyards do not use synthetic chemicals or GMOs (genetically modified inputs). Organic farming respects the soil to encourage a healthy ecosystem, a living soil, that results in healthy resilient vines and better terroir wine flavours, a sense of place. At the same time, groundwater and air are better protected from pollution.

L’Acadie Vineyards is a certified organic winery with rigorous inspections and audits to ensure that our winemaking and grape growing is transparent, traceable and follows the national Canada Organic Standard. The Canada Organic logo is on every one of our bottles.

What is Biocyclic Vegan Wine?

Biocyclic vegan agriculture means purely plant-based organic farming. This form of cultivation excludes all commercial livestock farming of animals and does not use any inputs of animal origin in viticulture or winemaking. Farms have to be organic as well, sharing that requirement with biodynamic farming, but the two practices diverge greatly when it comes to the ethics of farming animals. Instead of relying on animal manure, Biocyclic Vegan wineries have closed-loop systems with composted grape pomace for their nutrient management plans, and biodiversity for resilience.

Vegan wine certification is a significant addition to our environmental stewardship by scaffolding the benefits of our certified organic status to new heights. Health benefits, animal welfare and environment protection are reasons it is so popular in Europe.

What's the Difference? Biocyclic Vegan, Biodynamic and Organic

Organic and Biocyclic Vegan Wine in the Cellar

Our organic vegan wine is from soil to glass. Some of our winemaking practices include:

  • Natural fermentation practices with wild and non-GMO yeast
  • Vegan-friendly fining and clarification
  • Low sulfite use. The maximum sulfite level for organic wine is half as much as conventional wine.
  • Minimal intervention philosophy
  • Transparency in winemaking input choices

Certification: Trust, Transparency and Traceability

Organic certification to the Canada Organic standard is recognized for organic wine in the UK and EU.  Organic is considered top tier for sustainability by governments around the world.

The Biocyclic Vegan Standard is based in Germany and Greece and we were the first North American farm to be certified. They have recently partnered with V-label based in Switzerland to allow us to additionally use that globally respected logo on our bottles.

Certification matters for consumer trust to provide traceability and transparency that every grape that went into the bottle was grown organically and without animal inputs.

The Future of Organic and Biocyclic Vegan Wine

There is growing recognition that organic vineyards are more resilient to climate change. The Penedes appellation in Spain has required all vineyards to be organic by 2025 for quality and to regenerate the soil. Read more Regenerative agriculture is a cornerstone to both organic and Biocyclic Vegan standards with required cover crops and biodiversity.

There is increasing demand for organic and vegan wines as conscious wine consumers learn about the benefits of organic wine to avoid pesticide residues and unwanted animal inputs in their wine. Organic certification prohibits genetically modified inputs.

PIWI grape varieties bred for disease resistance and Nova Scotia’s hybrid  grape varieties like L’Acadie Blanc are becoming more popular with wine writers and influencers. More demand will encourage more organic vineyards.
